Can you count yourself a beekeeper if you lose them? [01 Oct 2007|06:50pm]
[ mood | morose ]

One would suggest that being a beekeeper requires that you're are able to keep your bees. Perhaps we're still just bee-havers.

Found out whyCollapse )

Evermore concert [17 Nov 2006|09:11pm]
[ mood | cheerful ]

Howdy folks!

Thought I should do a bit of a writeup on the concert that psycho_devli and I went to last night.

Evermore played an all-ages gig followed up at 9pm by an R18 one that we went to at The Civic, somewhere that I haven't been to before. Surprisingly with the amount of airtime Evermore has had lately it wasn't a full house - something I was very appreciative of after getting crushed at Velvet Revolver. We were probably about 2/3rds of the way to the back, though thats still not more than about 10 metres in there. We scored a good spot with a nice big pillar to lean against which helped a lot as I was rather tired.

At about 9.30pm NZ band Pluto opened and were a thoroughly enjoyable act. My main criticism was with the quality of the mixing - there was a horrible amount of sibilance going on, which was enough to make me cringe at times. They played a good set with a mix of older and newer songs many of which I knew from the radio. The crowd enjoyed them all.

Evermore came on about 10.45pm and played for just over an hour. They pulled out many of their big songs (some of which you can hear on their website) and a bunch that I didn't know.

Their music and vocals were very tight, probably due to the fact that they have played together for so long (being brothers and all!). Jon took the lead on all but the last two songs in which Dann (the drummer) did a solo number playing an acoustic and singing, then Peter sung the final song of the night (whilst playing keyboard) with Dann back on drums and Jon playing guitar.

Jon swapped back and forth between a 12 string acoustic and a Les Paul looking electric through the night, Peter did a good job of playing keys whilst swinging it around the stage during a couple of songs, and Dann did a fantastic job of singing while drumming (and doing both while standing up at times too).

Running was definitely the favourite song of the night with much audience participation going on. I recorded it on Sus' phone (I couldn't find mine when we left - found it when I went to bed, hiding on the duvet) but it didn't come out at all watchable, mainly due to the high volume levels. It possibly would have been better on mine, but who knows.

Speaking of the sound, the sibilance we experienced during Pluto was reduced, but still noticeable, it may have been more pronounced due to their singers voice, but it still shouldn't have happened. There was some feedback through the night, nothing too major, but enough to distract me (I've done a little sound reinforcement work in the past, enough to make me very aware of things that don't sound right). Overall the sound wasn't too bad though; The Civic is a small venue with acoustics that are less than ideal, however with the number of gigs they have there I would have thought I could expect a little more.

It was quite a refreshing concert in all, Evermore looked like they were really getting into it, and didn't come over as pretentious at all on stage as some bands can, the crowd loved them, and everyone had a good time. It's also a pleasant change to hear a three-piece with keys instead of a bass (though Peter did play Bass for one song). Their sound is very refreshing and the vocals work together well, with harmonising on some songs. It made a nice change from the more Rock oriented music I usually listen to (though they still play many of Evermore's songs on The Rock

All in all a good night! I hope you all enjoyed my ramblings, and that you'll go see Evermore if they come to a town near you!

Well, I got a new camera last week, and I've been told I have to post some pictures on here... I think it was just 'cause she wanted me to post anything here to be honest though.

It was such a nice day today that we went walking up at Victoria park in the arvo. It was a completely cloudless sky with a crescent moon just sitting up there looking completely out of place.

Sus wanted to play noughts and crosses :/
She also went on the slide, but I didn't change the shutter speed to the right setting and she was all blurry :(

We walked for probably a couple of km's (3 miles = 5 kilometers for you brits reading this). This was the start of where we walked. It was nice and bushy for a little while, then it just sort of opened up and wasn't as nice.

Pablo The Palypus gets aggro [20 Oct 2005|02:25pm]
Welcome to the story of Pablo The Platypus!

Pablo is a born and bred Mexican Platypus. His great-grandparents immigrated to Mexico in the mid 1930's in order to escape from the descrimination they faced in Australia from the Wombats. The theory was that the family could hide their unusual features under sombreros and ponchos. Their plan mostly worked at the time letting them blend in with the locals. Now however, with modern clothing becoming the norm, Pablo has ever increasing problems fitting it with his duck bill and webbed feet.

On the day in question, Pablo was in line at the social security office waiting to collect his weekly benefit. In front of him were a number of young Horned Lizards waiting for their turn. Pablo noticed them turning their heads to stare at him and whisper to their friends; obviously making fun of his appearance. Pablo did his best to ignore them, however as the sniggering continued unabated, he grew progressively more annoyed. By the time he reached the woman at the counter he was ready to explode - the departure of the offenders did little to calm him down, especially since he had heard a few chuckles and whispers from behind him as well. When he handed his card to the woman and asked for his cheque she greeted him cheerfully. "hi Pabolo".

"That's Pablo" he replied haughtily, noting that her name was Suzanne and pondering whether to call her Susan in retaliation. He chose to let it slide just that one time - one of his pet peeves was people mis-pronouncing his name. Then he heard it; the guys behind him starting to chant quietly (though with increasing volume) "Pabolo, Pabolo, Pabolo"

That did it for Pablo, ignoring the money Suzanne was now holding out for him, he turned and confronted his taunters "Come on then, lets have it!" he yelled before launching himself at them. Before the security guards managed to pull him off he had succeeded in stabbing at least two of them with the poison spurs on his feet that male Platypus are equipped with. As Pablo sat in room with two security guards towering over him waiting for the police, he felt strangely satisfied.

Part two coming soon - in which Pablo spends a night in the prison cells.....
